Alasdair C Whyte is an award-winning musician, performer and writer from the island of Muile/Mull off the west coast of Scotland.

Described as ‘one of the most emotionally affecting singers of his generation’ (Tim Chipping, fRoots), he has performed worldwide and recorded original and traditional Gaelic songs on numerous albums, including a solo album (Las, 2012), three albums with the band WHYTE (MAIM, 2021; Tairm, 2019; Fairich, 2016) and tracks with the likes of Niteworks (A’ Ghrian, 2022; NW, 2015) and Struileag/Shore to Shore (Children of the Smoke, 2014). A number of his original Gaelic songs have been performed, arranged and recorded by other artists.

His creative writing includes Maim-slè (2021), a book of original and traditional poetry and prose in Gaelic and English commissioned by Theatre Gu Leòr. He wrote and starred in the related theatre production MAIM (2020).

His academic writing includes Glasgow’s Gaelic Place-Names (Birlinn, 2023). He currently holds a prestigious Lord Kelvin/Adam Smith Research Fellowship in Celtic Onomastics (Name Studies) at the University of Glasgow. His research focusses primarily on the place-names of his native Muile/Mull. He was awarded a PhD for his place-name research by the University of Glasgow in 2017.

He was named Gaelic Ambassador of the Year by The Scottish Government in 2019 & 2020.

He is Chair of Co-Roinn Ghàidhlig Mhuile & Idhe/The Mull & Iona Gaelic Partnership and Ceòl is Craic. He is a Director of Dòrlach and Comann Mhuile & Idhe/The Mull & Iona Association.

COMMISSIONS

Alasdair is open to writing and music commissions. He has been commissioned to compose new songs, music, poetry and drama for several organisations, projects and choirs in the past, including Theatre Gu Leòir (‘MAIM’), the Scottish Poetry Library (‘Uile gu lèir / Vision’), Comann Gàidhealach Mhuile (‘Muile nam buadh’), Fèis na h-Òige (‘Buachaill’ Èite’) and Ceòl is Craic (‘Blàth na Bealtainne’), as well as bands including Tide Lines (‘Sealladh do shùl’).
